Είναι γνωστά με πολλά ονόματα, όπως Porcini στην Ιταλία, Varganya στην Ουγγαρία, Borowik Szlachetny στην Πολωνία, Cepes στη Γαλλία, και Steinpilz στη Γερμανία. Στην Ελλάδα είναι γνωστά με διάφορα ονόματα όπως Βολίτης, Βασιλικό ( Γρεβενά, Κοζάνη , Καστοριά ) Βασίλα ή Βασιλομανίταρο ( Πήλιο), Βασιλικάρα ( Πιερία) για το Β.edulis και Β.reticulatus. Καλογεράκι , καλογρίτσα, Καλοεράτσι για το Β. aereus. Είναι μανιτάρια τα οποία είναι αδύνατο να καλλιεργηθούν λόγω των ιδιαίτερων μυκορριζικών σχέσεων που αναπτύσσουν με δένδρα όπως τα έλατα και οι καστανιές.
Στην ελληνική φύση συλλέγονται σε 2 περιόδους Άνοιξη και φθινοπώρο.
Τα μανιτάρια αυτά σε αποξηραμένη μορφή διατηρούν δυνατά αρώματα δάσους και φουντουκιού για μεγάλο χρονικό διάστημα
