Μέχρι τα τέλη του 18ου αιώνα, το λάδανο θεωρείτο ένα από τα πιο σπουδαία φάρμακα. Αυτή η αρωματική ρητίνη (gummi ladanum) χρησιμοποιείται από αρχαιοτάτων χρόνων ενάντια στους λοιμούς της χολέρας, ως αρωματική ουσία για θυμιάσεις, αλλά και στην ταρίχευση των νεκρών. Ο πατέρας της βοτανικής Διοσκουρίδης ανάφέρει οτι έχει στυπτικές , θερμαντικές, και μαλακτικές ιδιότητες. Ο Ρωμαίος ιατρός Celsus (25π.Χ. - 25μ.Χ.), αναφέρει τη χρησιμοποίηση της ρητίνης της αλαδανιάς, ως έμπλαστρο σε κακοήθη σαρκώματα. Ο Ορειβάσιος, διαπρεπής Βυζαντινός ιατρός, που έζησε τον 4ο αιώνα, παρασκεύαζε αλοιφή με λάδανο κατά της τριχόπτωσης. Ο Πέρσης ιατρός Αβικέννας, (η σημαντικότερη ίσως φυσιογνωμία της αραβικής ιατρικής που έζησε στην Περσία (980-1037 μ.χ.), ο οποίος ασχολήθηκε εκτεταμένα με την αντιμετώπιση της παχυσαρκίας, αναφέρει τη χρήση του λαδάνου για την αποσκλήρυνση του στομάχου και εντέρου και με τη μορφή αλοιφής για τη θεραπεία του σπλήνα.
